Vitsa-Koukouli: The principle of subsidiarity

The elusive principle of subsidiarity actually concerns not only the EU, but also every state and every locally organized society across Europe, primarily for each individual citizen. One should not take away from individuals and commit to the community what they can do with their own forces and actions. The principle of subsidiarity indicates that decisions must be made, services offered and money spent at the point closest to the people. Subsidiarity secures the open society, the individual and his freedom, in the face of the pressures exerted by the centralized, interventionist, client, redistributive, conservative and paternalistic state. It is a principle of individual and social liberation and at the same time expresses the partial, coordinated and very careful granting of freedom, especially between collectives, to protection and justice, in order to achieve equal opportunities. Subsidiarity is better understood in the context of the federal states and the multiple identities of the citizen, as a "who does what" principle. Subsidiarity presupposes the acceptance of the individual's freedom of choice and of the individual responsibility inextricably linked to it. Nothing should be done by larger and more complex organisms if it can be done just as well by a smaller and simpler organism. It is a principle of limited government and individual freedom. Participation presupposes by nature collaborators and therefore involves compromises, both regulatory and voluntary, that is, respect for diversity in the pursuit of a degree of unity in each community. The principle of subsidiarity is a principle of freedom, participation and responsibility.
